Our standard.
We aim to meet the W3C Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.1 Level AA. WCAG 2.1 AA is the global benchmark for accessible web content, covering compatibility with screen readers, keyboard-only navigation, color contrast, text scaling, and clear labeling of interactive elements.
What we've built in.
We designed this site to be usable by everyone. Specifically:
- Semantic HTML landmarks — every page uses proper
<nav>,<main>,<article>, and<footer>tags so screen readers can jump between sections cleanly. - Skip-to-main-content link — press Tab on any page and you can skip past the navigation directly to the content.
- Visible keyboard focus — a clear black outline shows which element has focus while navigating with the keyboard.
- Form labels — every input, dropdown, and interactive control has a descriptive label, either visible or announced by screen readers.
- Alternative text and ARIA labels on every icon, button, and decorative element.
- High contrast — our black-on-cream color palette exceeds WCAG AA contrast ratios. Body text hits at least 4.5:1; larger text goes well beyond.
- Descriptive page titles and a consistent heading hierarchy on every page.
- Resizable text — the site responds to browser zoom up to 200% without loss of content or functionality.
Known limitations.
We're honest: no website is perfectly accessible. We're actively working on these known gaps:
- Interactive map (Google Maps) — the pan/zoom/pin interactions rely on Google's Maps JavaScript API, whose accessibility is outside our direct control. The same information is available on our List view of the Directory, which is fully accessible.
- Third-party components — our signup, login, and subscription modals come from Memberstack. We monitor their accessibility conformance but some behaviors are beyond our control.
- Manual testing coverage — we've tested with VoiceOver on Safari and keyboard-only navigation, but have not yet completed comprehensive manual testing across every assistive technology.
If any of these limitations prevent you from accessing information you need, please contact us — we'll help you get the information directly.
Tested with.
- VoiceOver on macOS (Safari)
- Keyboard-only navigation (Tab, Shift+Tab, Enter, Space, arrow keys)
- 200% browser zoom on Chrome and Safari
- Automated accessibility audits via Google Lighthouse
Browser & device support.
The site works on current versions of Chrome, Safari, Firefox, and Edge, on both desktop and mobile. We test regularly on iOS Safari and Android Chrome, which represent the majority of mobile parent traffic.
